American Christmas Tree Association Urges Holiday Fire Safety Awareness

In observance of National Fire Prevention Week, October 9th-15th, the American Christmas Tree Association reminds those who celebrate the Christmas holidays with a Christmas tree or any holiday decorations to make sure their smoke alarms are in good working order.
“Although we’ve just said goodbye to summer, the holiday season is right around the corner and many of our local retailers are already displaying Christmas trees and holiday decorations. As we begin planning for the Christmas holidays, we want to remind people of the fire dangers of improperly displaying and caring for their Christmas trees and other holiday decorations,” said Jami Warner, Executive Director of the American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA).
Public safety experts, such as the U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association are seeking to reduce fire deaths and injuries across the nation by urging residents to inspect and maintain their smoke alarms on a regular basis.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, from December 24th through the 26th, fire deaths, injuries, and dollar loss increase an average of 50 percent, 61 percent, and 43 percent, respectively.
If your household includes a natural tree in its festivities make sure to keep the tree well watered. Open flames from candles, lighters or matches start tree fires. Dry and neglected trees are a fire waiting to happen.
Artificial Christmas trees should be labeled, certified, or identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant.
“If you celebrate the holidays with a Christmas tree, be it real or artificial, we hope everyone will take the necessary precautions to have a safe and joyous holiday,” said Warner.
